Eighteen

Emily stared at the finished report on Meredith. It had been two days since Meredith had threatened to report her, and while there was no email in her inbox requesting that she pack up her things and leave the company, she still didn’t feel good. Perhaps Meredith had just been bluffing, and she never really intended to report her for what had happened, but that didn’t matter any more.

What mattered to Emily now was that she’d done something that could get her fired if anyone found out. Acting the way she had done, did she really think she could stay on at the company? Even if no one else knew what had happened, she would always know.

On every level she had failed to put boundaries in place, failed to think about the impacts of her actions, taken advantage of people’s vulnerability and broken trust. Trust that her employer had placed in her, that the hospital had placed in her and now the trust Meredith had placed in her.

She’d fucked up. She should have handed the job over to someone else and carried on with a clear conscience, but she’d let things go too far, and now she was having to live with the consequences, just like she’d feared.

She had tried to contact Meredith, to explain, but her calls and messages went unanswered and trying to speak to her at work given her recent threat just wasn’t an option. Things were bad enough and the only thing that could possibly do was make a bad situation worse. The damage that had been done with Meredith was irreparable. In the cold light of day there was only one decent thing to do, finish the report and leave the company.

How the hell did Phil manage to get hold of that report? She wondered, looking down at it. The report, which had been screwed up and unfolded a few times over the past couple of days, sat beside her laptop. It served as a reminder of exactly why she needed to finish her work and get the hell out of town.

“Where did he even find this?” she wondered out loud, picking it up to get a closer look at it. It was only then that she saw a dot of red ink in the corner, and realized exactly what the print out was. It was from the day she’d begun rewriting Meredith’s report. She’d gone to edit her old report by circling the bits that needed changing, before just starting fresh. Phil must have dug it from her trash. Shit. She had always been so careful about confidential reports and now to screw up on something so simple but so important. All because she hadn’t emptied her trash in the confidential waste that night. That alone was a terminable offense.

“Bastard,” she muttered, screwing the report up in anger. It sounded like he was going to lose his job—the investigation into his prescription pad had some grounds to it—and Emily couldn’t help but be a little bit glad about it.
